Thanksgiving Reflections 2006

Once again the holidays, the end of the year and another year are upon us. I was counting the days until Thanksgiving because:

1. This year Crystal & Jeremiah will be home for Thanksgiving.
2. Miracle baby Joshua (nephew) will turn one on 11/25/06 after his premature entry in the world the day after Thanksgiving 2005.
3. We capture the Pettits and the Vander Wagens together each Thanksgiving.
4. Our moms have persevered through various, continuous health obstacles.
5. We know we can count on our siblings if we need them even though we don't see each other frequently.
6. Special friendships connect us with old memories and new memories.
7. We take time to sit, relax and consider the year that is passing and how God is still our Abba Father, Jehovah-Jirah (our provider).

Thanksgiving has been the favorite holiday for Crystal, Eddie and me since we started hosting both families when Crystal was two. Recently I read an article where someone was sharing why Thanksgiving was their favorite holiday and I must agree:

it involves one big feast rather than a million parties
the giving of thanks doesn't involve a credit card
family sits around and talks rather than playing with new toys and gadgets
pumpkin pie trumps fruit cake

Each year we are reminded that it's not really about the turkey or dressing; it's about the gratitude. Let's remember:

*God is faithful
*God is present
*God is creative in His answers
*God will take care of everything better than we can in our own strength
*God holds things dearest to us close to His own heart
*God is still in control when hope disappoints, plans decompose, love bankrupts, stress overwhelms or life seems to sit back and laugh.

This season risk believing God is true to His character, His promises and His word.
Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
